When you can get yellow, you accept less than perfection in the gemstone. This bright yellow oval weighs 1.17 carats and is valued in the collection.
I have been cutting more rough tourmaline that have a lower grade for a variety of reasons. (08/2013)
1. I have a better selection of color available.
2. The rough cost less, but low yields can negate that advantage.
3. They are a challenge to select preform and facet to get the best out of the rough. Something I have been successful with.
4. I like the finished stones as long as I have good color and the gemstones don’t look damaged or too dull from the inclusions.
This bright included oval is a great yellow. The rough for this oval was sawed from a large pebble. The bigger piece of the pebble ended up producing a more golden colored round, because of its greater depth I think. When I get my spectrometer going again, I would like to check to see if they really have the same color, but just different tone levels. The gemstone weighs 1.17 carats and has good crystal.
