Sometimes you never know which part of the collection will spark the appreciation for tourmaline that I hope to instill in my fellow man. When I spent a day with a curator of gems and minerals at a large eastern college, she was most excited by the posted gemstone. Now it is a large medium dark bronze to olive green shield cut that is not highly valued by the trade. The color is also one of the more common colors of tourmaline, but the gemstone was hiding something deeper than its color revealed. It had been the terminus of a large crystal, that went threw chemical changes that oscillated and crystallized tourmaline into alternating bands of darker green and almost colorless bands. This made for a good time under her microscope. I bought it and cut it to bring a more realistic and broader based color balance to the collection. This solid member of the collection weighs 6.31 carats.
